Brand-new unit i → plane address → length & mirror
i and a+bi
Kap 4 opens a new branch: invent a unit i with i² = −1, pack numbers as a+bi points in the plane, then earn add/conjugate/modulus. Climb span carefully — each rung uses the last Tool. No polar yet. (imaginära enheten · reell/imaginär del · belopp)
V1 — Invent i: a square that is −1.
Brand-new (light bridge: you already know squares of reals never go negative).
Tool gained: i² = −1 (i as a quarter-turn unit, not a scare label).
- Principle. On the number line, no real square is negative. Extending the plane, one new unit i with i² = −1 unlocks arrows that turn.
- Model. i² = −1; then i³ = −i, i⁴ = 1 — a four-step cycle like quarter turns.
- Prediction / Answer. i⁴ = 1, so i²⁰ = (i⁴)⁵ = 1. Transfer: “√(−1)” is this unit, not a mystery ghost.
V2 — a+bi as a plane point / arrow.
Builds on: i² = −1 (V1) — real part + imaginary part.
Tool gained: z = a + bi ↔ point (a,b) / arrow from origin (Re = a, Im = b).
- Principle. Every complex number is one address in the plane: walk a on the real axis, b on the i-axis.
- Model. z = a + bi with a,b real. Equal when both parts match.
- Prediction / Answer. 3−2i sits at (3,−2). Transfer: sensor “east + north” packed as one z.
V3 — Add / conjugate / modulus.
Builds on: a+bi plane tool (V2) — vector add, flip Im, length.
Tool gained: (a+bi)+(c+di)=(a+c)+(b+d)i; conjugate z̄=a−bi; |z|=√(a²+b²).
- Principle. Add like vectors tip-to-tail. Conjugate flips the imaginary part (mirror in the real axis). Modulus is ordinary plane length.
- Model. z+w componentwise; z·z̄ = |z|²; |z| = √(a²+b²).
- Prediction / Answer. |3−4i|=5; (3−4i)+(1+2i)=4−2i. Next: multiply / divide with this kit.
1. Poor dump → rewrite
Book dump: “i = √(−1)” and a wall of a+bi drills with no plane picture. Our rewrite: i as the missing quarter-turn unit → address (a,b) → vector add, mirror conjugate, length |z|.
Weapons: i²=−1 → z=a+bi ↔ (a,b) → add / z̄ / |z|. Next: multiply & divide with this form.
2. Hands-on — a+bi, conjugate, |z|
Pick a = Re(z), b = Im(z). Read conjugate and modulus.
…
3. Fake → real
Fake
“Simplify √(−9).” Symbol scare, no job.
Real
A control board needs a 90° phase mark. Coding that mark as multiply-by-i (because i²=−1 is a half-turn when done twice) sizes the filter — same i Tool, now a phase job.
Gate — four, all required
1. Reconstruct: i² equals…
2. Why is a+bi a climb from i (not a brand-new dump)?
3. Predict: |5−12i| = ?
4. Transfer: conjugate of 2+7i and why |z|² = z z̄.
